A Name, Not a Number

Ten years after one of the most tragic migration disasters in the Mediterranean Sea, Labanof – the Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and Odontology at the University of Milan – is hosting “A Name, Not a Number”, a three-day event to commemorate the victims of the April 18, 2015 shipwreck and to reflect on the importance of the right to identity, even after death.
On that day, a fishing boat carrying around a thousand young migrants sank in the Sicilian Channel after departing from Libya, eventually coming to rest more than 400 meters below the surface. In response to the disaster, the Italian government launched the Melilli Mission, assigning Labanof the task of identifying the victims.
The event will take place from May 8 to 10 in the Aula Magna at the University of Milan, Via Festa del Perdono 7. The rich cultural program includes art installations, photography exhibitions, a screening of the documentary #387 by Madeleine Le Royer, concerts, and the play Faceless Castaways (Naufraghi senza volto).
