Is there Mafia in Milan?

“Is there mafia in Milan?” A provocative yet necessary question that opens the discussion on one of the most complex and often underestimated issues of our time: the presence of mafia organizations in large urban centers and their entrenchment within the economic, social, and political fabric.
The event, promoted by the Department of International, Legal, Historical and Political Studies of the Università degli Studi di Milano and the CROSS research center, will take place on Monday, June 29, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in Room 201 at the Università degli Studi di Milano, located at Via Festa del Perdono 7, Milan, with free admission.
Among the speakers will be prosecutor Alessandra Dolci, who has long been at the forefront of the fight against organized crime, together with Alessandra Cerreti, Professors Nando dalla Chiesa, Fabio Basile, and Roberto Cornelli, as well as journalists Cesare Giuzzi and Mario Portanova, who have been reporting on and analyzing the mafia phenomenon for many years.
The debate will also be enriched by the international contribution of Cecilia Vassena, joining remotely from Vienna, as well as by scholars from other Italian universities: Rocco Sciarrone (Università di Torino), Stefania Pellegrini (Università di Bologna), and Soretta Giolo (Università degli Studi di Ferrara).
This event represents an important opportunity to reflect on the relationship between organized crime, civil society, and institutions, and to better understand how deeply rooted the mafia phenomenon remains, even in the heart of a major European metropolis.
