National PhD in Peace Studies
The National PhD Program in Peace Studies is an interdisciplinary and innovative research and training hub dedicated to the study of conflict and peace. The first program of its kind in Italy, it was established at the initiative of RUniPace, the Network of Italian Universities for Peace (CRUI Network). The network has shaped the program’s founding values, interdisciplinary approach, and commitment to fostering constructive collaboration between universities and the broader society, while respecting the core principles of the participating universities and the CRUI that unites them.
Through a highly specialized academic path, the PhD program aims to train professionals in various fields related to peace studies. Specifically, it seeks to develop highly qualified experts capable of: 1) Working in academia and educational institutions – both in formal education and lifelong learning – by providing expertise, knowledge, and skills on peace-related issues from a global and interdisciplinary perspective; 2) engaging with organizations, institutions, public administrations, and intergovernmental bodies, as well as social, corporate, and community structures at local, national, and international levels, to contribute to the development of inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable policies; 3) conducting research on peace and conflict studies while designing and implementing educational, research, and third-mission projects at both national and international levels.
The headquarters of the National PhD in Peace Studies is at Sapienza University of Rome, with the University of Milan as a sponsoring institution. Professor Roberto Cornelli (University of Milan, CRIMePO) is a member of the PhD Faculty Board and, along with Professor Grazia Mannozzi (University of Insubria), is responsible for Curriculum 9 – Restorative Justice, Transitional Justice, and Nonviolent Conflict Transformation.
