What Maximum Penalties in a Democratic State? Rereading “L’abolition” by Robert Badinter (Fayard, 2000)



Dialogues and Intersections is a series of meetings dedicated to the presentation and discussion of books on topics related to politics, justice, and business. The event on 8th May 2025, titled “What Maximum Penalties in a Democratic State?”, offers a reflection on Robert Badinter’s work “L’abolition” (Fayard, 2000), with particular focus on the death penalty and the limits of punitive power in a democracy. Prominent scholars and jurists will participate, including Luis Arroyo Zapatero, Daniela Bifulco, Paola Severino, and Vladimiro Zagrebelsky, with moderation by Stefano Manacorda and opening remarks by Piergiuseppe Biandrino.
