Rehabilitation Between Punishment and Reparation

Fifty years after the entry into force of the law that shaped the Italian penitentiary system, the Italian Association of Criminal Law Professors has decided to organize a high-level conference to explore the topic of rehabilitation and its role in the contemporary criminal justice system.
On June 6, in Pisa, five sessions will be held, dedicated to in-depth analysis and discussion on various aspects of the topic: from the relationship with imprisonment and future perspectives, to alternative measures to detention – with a look at foreign legal systems – including the role of reparation, with particular attention to corporate criminal liability, and the relationship between victims and restorative justice.
On June 7, participants will have the exceptional opportunity to visit the correctional facility located on the island of Gorgona. Following a roundtable discussion on the subject – featuring Constitutional Court Judge Francesco Viganò, together with guests and inmates – it will be possible to visit both the prison and the island.
Attendance at the conference is free of charge; however, registration is required for the island visit by May 25, 2025.
