Free expression of identities and prohibitions of discrimination in the secular state. An interdisciplinary perspective

On 18 December 2024, the Department of Legal Sciences “Cesare Beccaria” at the University of Milan will host its Fifth Annual Conference, titled “Libera espressione delle identità e divieti di discriminazione nello Stato laico. Uno sguardo interdisciplinare” (“Free Expression of Identities and Discrimination Bans in the Secular State: An Interdisciplinary Perspective”).

The conference will address highly relevant and current issues, not only within the interdisciplinary scientific field but also in the ongoing civil society debate. Specifically, the topics discussed across various panels will cover the meaning of “symbolic rights”, identity expressions through symbols, the application of the principle of secularism in the legal system, the limits of freedom of expression with particular reference to hate speech and fascist manifestations, the definition of discrimination, and the identification of tools for protecting the fundamental rights involved.

Participation is free, subject to seat availability.
