Book Presentation – “Bitter Land. Migrant Women, Exploitation, and Forms of Resistance in the Sicilian Countryside”

As part of the initiatives promoted within the “La Statale for Peace” program of the University of Milan, a new series of monthly events is being organized, dedicated to the presentation of books that address, from different and interdisciplinary perspectives, current issues related to peace and social justice.
The initiative aims to provide a space for reflection, dialogue, and cultural engagement open to the academic community and the interested public, fostering discussion among scholars, authors, students, and citizens. Each meeting offers an opportunity to explore, through reading and discussion, contemporary challenges related to building peace and protecting fundamental rights.
On November 19, 2025, the book “Bitter Land. Migrant Women, Exploitation, and Forms of Resistance in the Sicilian Countryside” (Milano University Press, 2025) by Monica Massari, Federica Cabras, and Simona Miceli will be presented. Joining the authors will be Roberto Cornelli, Full Professor of Criminology at the University of Milan. The volume recounts the stories of female agricultural laborers and social workers, bringing them into dialogue with intellectuals and artists to explore themes of migration and women’s resistance.
