R. Cornelli, I. Sales (eds.) (2026), Youth, Trust and Deviance: Understanding to Intervene in Peripheral Areas

April 26th, 2026

In a context characterized by increasing social and territorial inequalities, the volume “Giovani, fiducia e devianza nelle periferie. Conoscere per intervenire” [Youth, Trust and Deviance in the Peripheries. Understanding to Intervene], promoted by Avviso Pubblico and edited by Roberto Cornelli and Isaia Sales, seeks to examine not only what occurs when the relationship of trust between young people, institutions, and communities deteriorates—particularly in peripheral areas—but also how effective interventions can be developed, drawing on concrete experiences.

The volume is grounded in the direct observation of marginal contexts, which are often framed through the reductive lenses of deviance and stereotyping rather than understood as complex environments marked by both vulnerabilities and diverse resources. It brings together contributions from across the national territory, spanning Northern and Southern Italy. The analysis demonstrates how fragmented or exclusively security-oriented policy approaches prove inadequate in the absence of shared and participatory responses capable of actively engaging young people. From this perspective, in-depth knowledge of local contexts emerges as a necessary condition for the design of effective interventions, in which addressing different forms of deviance is predicated upon the (re)construction of trust. This, in turn, entails sustained investment in relational practices, attentive listening, and shared responsibility, recognizing young people not merely as policy recipients but as active agents in the co-production of responses. The volume provides a theoretically informed social analysis combined with an operational perspective, offering valuable interpretative frameworks for practitioners working in local contexts as well as for policymakers engaged in the design of more equitable and effective public policies.
