The police force exists to enforce the law and contain social violence, but it is itself a form of violence that must be controlled and channeled in accordance with the vision of society it aims to promote. In contemporary democracies, the use of force raises complex ethical and political dilemmas that, without a framework to interpret the meaning of “policing”, often appear to fall solely on the shoulders of individual officers.Through a research journey that examines the major theoretical issues intertwining police action and the theme of violence – prompted by recent cases of police brutality – the author offers an interdisciplinary analysis that moves beyond the simplistic narrative of “bad apples” (or “rotten trees”). Instead, the book highlights the semantics of violent acts that emerge from the intersection of various processes legitimizing police actions. This analytical perspective broadens the scope for reforming the security sector, with a particular focus on how cultural systems, policing policies, and professional expertise influence the subjectivity of officers tasked with “choosing” whether to use force in specific situations.
