L. Squillace (2026), Youth and Authority: Trust in Law Enforcement in San Siro

April 26th, 2026

The chapter “Giovani e autorità. La fiducia nelle forze dell’ordine a San Siro" [Youth and Authority: Trust in Law Enforcement in San Siro], authored by Laura Squillace, is included in the volume “Youth, Trust and Deviance: Understanding to Intervene in Peripheral Areas”, promoted by Avviso Pubblico and edited by Roberto Cornelli and Isaia Sales.

The chapter presents preliminary findings from a study conducted in the San Siro neighborhood of Milan, aimed at investigating the relationship between young people with a migrant background and law enforcement agencies. The contribution focuses in particular on the dimension of trust, highlighting a complex relationship between young people and authorities, characterized by tensions, in which distrust emerges not only from direct personal experiences but also—and more significantly—from indirect experiences shared within peer groups. The chapter underscores the importance of fostering relationships grounded in mutual respect and attentive listening, taking into account the perspectives of the social actors involved while also acknowledging the everyday realities of young people living in stigmatized neighbourhoods.
