The restorative path to justice

We recommend the reading of the book “The restorative path to justice” by Antoine Garapon, published in March 2026 by Vita e Pensiero.
The book addresses the issue of justice in the face of extreme crimes – such as genocide, torture, sexual abuse, and systemic violence – questioning the limits of traditional penal responses when confronted with the incommensurability of harm. Drawing on theoretical reflections and the author’s experience in numerous encounters with survivors of serious crimes, the book shows how justice can move beyond the mere application of legal norms toward processes of recognition, reparation, and return to life, without minimizing the gravity of wrongdoing or oversimplifying the complexity of harm. The volume thus contributes to contemporary debates on restorative justice and the transformation of criminal law, offering relevant insights for criminology, legal philosophy, and punishment studies.
