Punitive Routines: Everyday Sanctions, 19th–20th Century

June 08th, 2026

We recommend the reading of the volume “Routines punitives. Les sanctions du quotidien, XIXe–XXe siècle” (Punitive Routines: Everyday Sanctions, 19th–20th Century), edited by Elsa Génard and Mathilde Rossigneux-Méheust and published in 2023.

This edited collection offers a social history of ordinary sanctions between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, examining the role of punishment in the everyday life of so-called disciplinary institutions. Through contributions focusing on different settings—including prisons, schools, military barracks, psychiatric hospitals, convents, and welfare institutions—the volume analyzes routine and minor punitive practices that regulate behaviour, social relations, and forms of authority. Drawing in part on Foucauldian debates on micropenalties, the book highlights how everyday sanctions provide a privileged lens through which to understand mechanisms of discipline and the materiality of power in contemporary societies.
