Dynamics of Staff–Prisoner Relationships: A Narrative Literature Review

October 20th, 2025

In the chapter “Dynamics of Staff–Prisoner Relationships: A Narrative Literature Review”, published in Prison Life Organization and Security: Criminological, Penological, Sociological, Psychological, Legal, and Security Aspects (Institute of Criminological and Sociological Research, Belgrade, 2025), Milena Milićević critically examines how relationships between prison staff and prisoners shape prison life. Specifically, drawing on 65 studies published between 1961 and 2024, the chapter shows that the quality of these interactions affects not only everyday experiences in prison but also institutional climate, security, and rehabilitation outcomes.

The author highlights the central role of procedural justice, communication styles, shared values, and organizational conditions, demonstrating that relationships built on respect and trust can reduce conflict and encourage positive change. Offering a timely synthesis of the literature, the chapter provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of building a more humane prison environment.
