Crossing Lines: Realities of migrant children at EU external borders

July 07th, 2025

Save the Children’s new report, "Crossing Lines: Realities of migrant children at EU external borders", analyses the conditions experienced by migrant children, with a particular focus on unaccompanied and/or separated minors arriving at the European Union’s main external borders - specifically in Greece, Italy, Spain, Finland, and Poland.

Based on testimonies collected through interviews with frontline practitioners as well as with the minors themselves, the report highlights how the increasing of security measures adopted by several EU member states to protect national borders often pose a serious risk to the rights of migrant children, particularly those who are unaccompanied. The study documents how these measures frequently result in systematic violations of children’s rights and fail to uphold the principle of the best interests of the child, exposing young migrants to practices and conditions that undermine their safety, protection, and overall well-being.
