Criminalization of Dissent in Times of Crisis. Published by Palgrave the volume edited by Di Ronco and Selmini
December 28th, 2024

The volume “Criminalisation of Dissent in Times of Crisis”, edited by Rossella Selmini and Anna Di Ronco for the Critical Criminological Perspectives series by Palgrave Macmillan Cham (2024), offers a comprehensive exploration of the policies and practices aimed at undermining dissent during both recent and past social, political, economic, and health crises. Examining various cases of activism and opposition across both the Global North and South, the book analyzes the many ways in which state and non-state actors have targeted dissent, activism, and protest—including those led by vulnerable groups. These strategies include silencing dissenting voices, restricting the right to protest, intensifying policing and surveillance of activists, imposing heavy administrative sanctions, criminalizing and prosecuting dissidents, and even resorting to the killing of activists. The volume contributes to the broader debate on processes of criminalization, policing, the rule of law, and the overall quality of our democracies.
