The Authoritarianism Observatory has been launched
April 10th, 2025
The Osservatorio Autoritarismo [Authoritarianism Observatory] has been launched by the political culture association Libertà e Giustizia and Castelvecchi Editore, in collaboration with faculty, students, and researchers from a number of Italian universities. The initiative aims to analyze, document, and critically discuss the ongoing transformations of Italian democracy, in relation to broader European and global contexts. In response to the increasingly systematic use of punitive legislation, surveillance, and emergency decrees—and a public narrative that fuels social alarm and legitimizes restrictions on rights—the Observatory seeks to establish an open and plural space for critical reflection, documentation, and civic engagement. This is not an academic or militant initiative, but a cultural and civic project that strives to make expert analysis accessible, to engage citizens—especially younger generations—and to contribute to the development of democratic forms of resistance.
