The survey “So far, so close: the attitudes of adolescents and young people towards their peers with migrant backgrounds in Italy” was conducted by the IPSOS-Lattanzio-KIBS consortium and commissioned by UNICEF. It analyzes the attitudes of 1,000 adolescents and young people aged 15 to 24 living in Italy regarding migration, discrimination, and racism, with particular attention to perceptions of peers with a migrant background. The main objective of the research was to analyze how young people’s attitudes develop on these issues and to identify the discriminatory experiences of adolescents and young people living in Italy, considering the complexity of their individual and cultural identities.

According to the results presented in the report, while most of the sample shows a sense of belonging to Italian society, another significant portion feels excluded. Special focus was given to the widespread instances of direct or indirect discrimination experienced by respondents, particularly those with a migrant background. The sample considers foreign people as one of the most vulnerable categories in Italy and frequent victims of discrimination and racism. Regarding the view of the migration phenomenon in Italy, most participants overestimate the presence of migrants in the country. Finally, a large majority of the sample believes that intercultural exchange opportunities can enrich the ability to bring people from different backgrounds closer together. The report also provides a series of recommendations to the educational system, the media, and Italian authorities, emphasizing the importance of implementing concrete measures to prevent and combat racism and discrimination.
